Due
to its outstanding position, panorama and selection of cultivations
this splendid olive grove is definitely the most beautiful in
the Umbria region: located below the secular Rocca Maggiore,
it crowns and characterises the landscape of the entire city
of Assisi with which it combines and harmonizes. For more than
five generations the farm has adopted the exclusive use of organic
cultivations.
The ancient BRIZI family name, from which our family descends,
is of Venetian origin and in 1366 Antonio Brizi was already
a part of the Council of Venice together with seven other families.
Only at the end of the 1600's a branch of the family was established
in Assisi.
All of our ancestors were architects and they contributed to
urban organisation of the city. We must remember Architect Giuseppe
Brizi who identified and discovered the remains of the Saint
because in that period it was not certain if St. Francis was
buried in the Porziuncola where he died or in the Basilica that
was built after his death.
He created and built the Underground Church in the Basilica
of St. Francis where the remains of the Saint were buried. Giuseppe
Brizi died in 1840. His son Alfonso was an Architect, an important
archaeologist, a famous botanist and humanist. He discovered
and collected all of the remains of the ancient Civitas Romana
below the territory and the city of Assisi, developing and creating
the Archaeological Museum, which can still be visited today:
he invented and developed the Local Art Gallery and contributed
to enhancing its patrimony. He filled the city with a modern
and efficient hospital and a large Park in the higher part of
the city, the current Pincio. Alfonso Brizi was the first botanist
of the "Colle del Paradiso" where he planted prestigious
cultivars, the result of careful research carried out with Monks
and Priests who had been selecting special olive trees for a
very long time for production reasons. A new collection of roses
has now been added to the olive grove, chosen by Alfonso's daughter,
Anna Brizi and by her niece Adriana who has now created a guided
visit called "Walks through the Olive Grove" for small
groups of people with samplings of typical products of the company.
Due to its terracings for the culture of olive trees and the
vineyards this olive grove can now be found in the famous "Treccani"
Encyclopaedia under the word "Assisi".
